The smooth sounds of R&B with a gospel twist !! pTcN8E&Unz
jW.IkG[|
Though Public Mind is Nehemiah抯 first solo release, it is not Nehemiah抯 WD'[|s\
debut on the music scene.  Raised in his father抯 church, Nehemiah has m@c\<-P
been performing music in one form or another for most of his life.   /80RO:'7
Nehemiah had recorded his first song by the age of 12 and at the age of 15 Ix+\oq,O
he headlined his first concert in his hometown of Portland, Oregon with >f~y2YAr
the proceeds going toward teenage victims of domestic violence.  It was c ^+{YH;k
after that concert that Nehemiah was convinced that he wanted to pursue ^s3SzB@
music professionally. |("zW7g
:8Ql (I
This pursuit has had its ups and downs but each one of them has shaped ^14a[ta/'
who Nehemiah is today, both as an artist and as a person.  The highlights Z'\{hL S
of Nehemiah抯 early career included an appearance in the motion picture m^YYdyn]M
Reggie抯 Prayer, starring the late football star Reggie White.  In Cq%1j[
addition, Nehemiah appeared on a nationally syndicated talk show, took $tca: b}Mk
his live show to Canada, and opened up for the famed R&B/Gospel group, _Dg|Iz,Uh
Virtue.  The experiences of his teenage years opened the door for Pu0O6@Rg
Nehemiah to later join Soul, a contemporary gospel group signed to a I(0 *cWO
subsidiary of the Hendrix record label.  This release spent 9 weeks on a*UxRi8
the Billboard gospel charts and peeked at number 36.  Though the group Ov~>* [
was short-lived it provided Nehemiah the opportunity to tour the states )tR@\G>%
and establish relationships that would bear fruit in the years to come. sy+tLDMd
:LMLY<8>9
After briefly filling the lead vocalist spot in a group with producer HR 6+_qGV
Crump (Beyonce), Nehemiah decided to focus on developing his solo project.   \oV g(J&o
His debut solo album, Public Mind, is the product of all of his life CW;=q[+w
experiences, both good and bad.  The mid-tempo track 揟hat Person?is a hT$/B|
celebratory autobiographical account of all that happened to Nehemiah as CoQ<Ky}*
he recognized all that Jesus Christ is.  Another personal song, 揊ly Away,? :)Z.!
was written for his daughter, Amiah, who died several weeks after being b#{[Pk,w9
born.  It is songs like these that helped the album find its title.   ]@mV9:n{
Nehemiah explains, 揟he title of the album is intended to communicate on \m3ca-Y
two levels.  First, I wanted to emphasize that I identify with my audience.   0r'<aA`=I
The things that they struggle with, I struggle with.  The things that !:<n]-U
trouble them, trouble me.  Second, I wanted to show that this album is not P4dhP-t
simply a collection of songs, it is a window into my mind and life which I ]^DNzqu=@h
have made public through this release.?      ~&T%u.u 7
lX|d:HFtP
Nehemiah lists artists ranging from Commissioned to Boyz II Men to Phil " midC(rTm
Collins among his influences and the diversity of his personal palate comes ^q)s
through in the diversity of the album.  Nehemiah wrote and produced much of iz\GahK
the disc himself while also teaming with producers and songwriters Derek 222Mm/QN
Clark (Fred Hammond), Anson Dawkins (Dawkins & Dawkins), Chris Turner bZzB\FB~
(Singleton抯), Cole Brown (Michelle Williams) and his brother J.B. _(J/$D
(Benjiman).  The production and vocals on the project are top notch, there 1usLCG>w{
is nothing about Nehemiah抯 debut that sounds like the independent project 9/I|oh_ G
it truly is.  But while people will definitely respond to the impressive w4\g]\
vocals and banging tracks Nehemiah hopes they will especially be drawn to C.q4rr
the stories.  揝ome of these songs are birthed out of experiences I抳e .Fn7yTQ%
lived and some of them were born out of the experiences of my community.   ;UDd4@3`S"
Not all people will be able to relate to the exact details of every song but 4lpkq
I believe everyone will find themselves somewhere in each song.  Each of s&~i S[
them speaks of something true and real that we can all identify with.  I 4ai|*8.
look forward to hearing how people find their own stories in these songs.? _|vY)4B 4U
