墓志铭一词英语中用Gravestone Epitaph表示，下面是历史上一些著名人物的墓志铭：
美国富兰克林 Benjamin Franklin
Printer Benjamin Franklin印刷工人本杰明·富兰克林，表现了他崇高品质——谦逊不忘本
英国莎士比亚 Shakespeare
1661年4月23日在家乡斯托拉夫镇逝世，享年52岁。其墓地至今未遭到挖掘，可能和墓志铭有关：
Good friend, for Jesus’ sake forbear朋友，看在上帝的情分上，
To dig the dust enclosed here千万别掘此墓，
Belest be the men that spares these bones动土者将受灾，
And curst be he that moves my bones保护者会得福。
美国厄内斯特·海明威 Earnest Hemingway

自拟的墓志铭是：

美国《独立宣言》执笔人杰弗逊 Thomas Jefferson
于该宣言发表50周年——1826内月4日辞世。他自拟的墓志铭是：
Here was burned Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, of the statute of Virginia for religious freedom, and father of the University of Virginia.

公元前48年壮烈牺牲的300名斯巴达勇士的墓志铭：

还有一个有意思的，虽不是历史名人（其实是个动物），却非常经典：
给军骡的墓志铭：
Here lies Maggie, the mule who in her time kicked a general, two colonels, four majors, ten captains, twenty-four lieutenants, forty sergeants,two hundred and twenty privates, and a bomb.
军骡马吉葬在这里。在她的一生中，她踢过一个上将，两个上校，四个少校，十个上尉，二十四个士官，二百二十个士兵和一枚。
