Since forming in Melbourne during 2006, Downhills Home haven’t let the grass grow under their feet. Having accumulated a considerable amount of credible support slots, they’ve quickly unveiled their debut album, Minor Birds.
As you would suspect from the name, Downhills Home sound like a bunch of city boys taking their stab at the country/roots medium. The trap of the genre is that many bands fall into too many clichés, or fail to offer anything new or out of the ordinary. Unfortunately this is sometimes the case with Minor Birds.
Sure The Mess You’re In is pleasant enough and To Make Light Of Our Load has a tidy little hook, but is there really any need for another band to be peddling further batch of Dylan, Young or the Byrds pastiches?
On its own Minor Birds is a safe enough listen, but as far as breathing any new life into an increasing tired old genre Downhills Home are facing an uphill battle.
