The band’s last album, 2003’s Lesser Than Opaque, was recorded using only one microphone and a 16-track recorder, but it is still a must-have. On Lesser, the band breaks the rules of traditional, cookie-cutter indie rock by making it dynamic, mellow-dramatic, and smart. The album is 10 tracks but feels shorter with a perfect mix of concentrated, down-tempo songs — such as the record’s opener, “Radiate the Cost of Grace” — and upbeat, liberating pop songs such as “The Real Thing.” Ruetschle’s melodies are polished perfectly and ear-pleasing throughout, particularly shining on acoustic tracks such as “Working Class Girls.” “I guess we’re just a melting pot of indie rock and pop,” Ruetschle said. “But the songs really just take on a life of their own.” “We’re like the anti-jam band, we love good pop music,” Ingram added. “I mean, stop wanking and give us some songs.”
