Richard Kalan Porter (born November 11, 1985) is a singer from Medicine Hat, Alberta, who was the second winner of the reality television series Canadian Idol. Beating out 8,977 other contestants, Porter was crowned "Idol" on September 16, 2004 in front of a live TV audience.
Kalan's first single "Awake in a Dream" was released on October 5, 2004. "Awake in a Dream" has become the best selling debut single for a Canadian artist to date and was certified 8x Platinum by the Canadian Recording Industry Association in November 2004.
In 2006, Kalan presented at the 2006 Juno Awards in Halifax.
In July 2006 Kalan announced to fans through his official website that BMG was giving him time off before recording his second album. He returned home to his family's buffalo and cattle ranch to be with his mother, who is undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer, and his grandmother, who faces surgery.
His second record, Wake Up Living, will be released 28 August 2007. The first single, "Down In Heaven", was available to radio starting 4 June. The album will consist of 12 tracks (according to his website blog).
