The Haints began as an acoustic side project of the Groovie Ghoulies, adding guitarist Cory Vick and percussionist David Houston. But, Borg-like, they keep collecting and assimilating new musicians, like songwriter Dan Janisch, Jackpot’s Rusty Miller and the one and only Anton Barbeau. Not to mention MTX’s Ted Angel and Bobby Jordan, when playing out. The music is a little bit country, a little bit rock ’n’ roll, and a little bit folky, too. That may not make a good lyric for Donny and Marie Osmond, but the Haints know how to work it. This record is about using their country, folk and roots-rock influences to give the Ghoulie songs new life. It shows off Kepi’s strong, intuitively melodic songwriting, with lyrics that manage meaningfulness through simplicity. Consider this battle won.
